Reading
My passion to help children who struggle with reading started many years ago and has grown as I have learned innovative and field-leading techniques and applied them to have positive results with my countless students. I implement best instructional practices through explicit, systematic and sequential reading instruction such as Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory reading techniques as well as the methods of the Columbia Reading project. I assess my students in the different pillars of reading such as phonics/decoding, comprehension and fluency to determine what I need to focus on during my lessons with my students. I creatively tailor my lesson plans to each student’s unique needs and I continually adapt my instruction by monitoring my students’ progress and adjusting accordingly. As a result I witness the success of my teaching through the progression of my students.

I introduce the phonemes of our language using the kinesthetic production of speech sounds. I teach my students the phoneme/grapheme correspondence alphabetic system in a carefully sequenced progression. I use the motor patterns of handwriting instruction to support letter recognition. My lessons are designed to have visual drills, which help students to recognize graphemes and know possible phonemes represented. The auditory drill and the goal is for students to hear phonemes in isolation and identify logical ways to spell the sound.
